SUMMARY:Talk - 19th Century Life in Rural Dorset
DESCRIPTION:Talk – 19th Century Life in Rural Dorset – Given by Martin Gething\, National Trust. \nThe tiny Clouds Hill cottage\, near Bovington\, was a farm labourers’ tied cottage throughout the nineteenth century and into the early twentieth century. \n  \nToday it’s preserved in the care of the National Trust as a memorial to T. E. Lawrence – Lawrence of Arabia – and is essentially ‘frozen in time’ in the mid-1930s. \n  \nRather like the BBC television series on A House Through Time\, this talk will build up a picture of the families who called Clouds Hill home over a period of more than a century\, bringing to life a typical Dorset rural community that is so often invisible in documented records. \n  \nThe story of the cottage draws extensively on the archives at Dorset History Centre\, and in particular the Estate Papers of the Framptons of Moreton\, together with information from The National Archives\, the British Library and the British Newspaper Archive\, and genealogical resources. \n  \nThere’s no charge for this talk and it’s open to both members and non-members. Donations to the work of Weymouth Civic Society are welcome. \nRefreshments available from 6.30pm and the talk is at 7pm. \n \n

SUMMARY:Talk - The Archaeology of North Quay/High West St.
DESCRIPTION:Talk – The Archaeology of North Quay/High West St. by Richard O’Connell of Context One Archaeology. \nContext One Heritage & Archaeology carried out an excavation in the car park around the former Weymouth and Portland Borough Council offices in the autumn of 2023 as part of the demolition programme for Dorset Council. \nThe site previously encompassed the historic core of Weymouth town. Following successful community involvement in an archaeological evaluation on the site in 2021\, which also spawned an oral history project\, Context One proposed a similar community project for the excavation. \nOver a 12 week period\, more than 80 volunteers\, many from Dig the Street community group\, took part in a highly successful investigation that produced evidence from the early genesis of Weymouth as a town right up to the 1960s when the High Street was demolished. \nRichard will be talking about the initial findings of this unique excavation and what it means for our understanding of how Weymouth may have developed over the last 800 years. \nRefreshments from 6.30pm\, talk at 7pm. \nDonations welcome towards the work of Weymouth Civic Society.

SUMMARY:Talk - The Marine Wildlife off Portland
DESCRIPTION:From local wildlife photographer Sandra Stalker. \n \nSandra is an award winning underwater photographer living and diving on the wonderful Dorset coast. She has been diving for over 24 years\, having learned to dive in very poor visibility in Portland harbour in a stormy September. She was inspired by tropical underwater imagery in books and films. \nAfter seeing her first fish on her third dive she realised there was life within our waters. She’s gone on to promote the wonderful array of often overlooked colourful marine life that the Dorset shores have to offer through her photography.  \nSandra enjoys the challenges of finding interesting new ways to portray and photograph the local underwater life. She’s has been awarded in Underwater Photographer of the Year and a finalist in Close up photographer of the year\, Wildlife photographer of the year\, British Wildlife Photography awards and the European wildlife photography awards. \nThis year she was awarded Most promising British underwater Photographer in underwater photographer of the year. \nThis talk is about the marine wildlife off the Dorset coast and will be illustrated with Sandra’s photographs. \nThere’s no charge for this talk and it’s open to both members and non-members. Donations to the work of Weymouth Civic Society are welcome. \nRefreshments available from 6.30pm and the talk is at 7pm.
